About Us

Our story

Hi — I'm Ellie. I built Kittelo because my kitchen drawer was a graveyard of rubbish gadgets.

Not a corporate "About Us" page. Just the actual reason this shop exists, written by the person who runs it.

The problem, honestly

I spent seven years as a line chef in restaurant kitchens around Bristol before I had my son and moved to prepping meals at home instead of a professional kitchen. Same job, different scale — except suddenly I didn't have a brigade of commis chefs doing my veg prep for me.

So I did what everyone does: I bought the gadgets. The £8 chopper from a stall at the market. The "as seen on TV" one with 47 five-star reviews that turned out to be fake. Two of them cracked the first week. One sliced my thumb because the blade guard was moulded wrong. By the time my son started nursery, I had a whole drawer of expensive plastic that I was too embarrassed to admit I'd wasted money on.

That drawer is basically why Kittelo exists.

What changed

My partner, James, spent nine years doing quality testing for a consumer electronics company — the unglamorous job of finding out exactly how and when things break before they ship. He'd come home with stories about products that looked identical on a listing page but were built completely differently underneath.

We started applying that same testing mindset to kitchen and home gadgets, mostly out of self-interest — I just wanted one chopper that wouldn't die in six weeks. We'd order five or six versions of the same type of product, run them through actual daily use in our own kitchen, and only keep the one that survived. The rest got returned, given away, or binned.

The vegetable chopper that survived that process is now ChopEase — the first product we ever listed, and still the one I use every single day.

Why we choose the gadgets we do

We're not a factory and we don't pretend to be. We work with manufacturers overseas, like most home gadget shops do — but every product on this site has to earn its place. Our bar for that is boring and specific:

  • ✓ It has to solve one annoying, specific problem well — not claim to do fifteen things badly.
  • ✓ It gets used in our own home for at least a month before it's allowed on the site.
  • ✓ No parts that crack, snap, or fail within normal use — if it breaks in testing, it doesn't get listed.
  • ✓ If I wouldn't buy it a second time with my own money, we don't sell it once with yours.

Who's actually behind this

Kittelo is run by me and James, from home, in the UK. There's no call centre and no warehouse full of people — when you message us, one of us actually reads it and replies. When something arrives broken or wrong, we sort it, because we'd want the same thing done for us.

We're not trying to be the biggest home gadget shop out there. We just don't want you to end up with a drawer like mine used to be.

"Fewer gadgets, chosen properly, beat a drawer full of things that half-work." — Ellie, Kittelo
